Artist's Comments

I drew this image for two reasons. The first reason is that I just bought an uncorrected reader’s proof of “The Black Hand” by Will Thomas and so was able to read this novel before it will be published in July. The second reason is that upon reading the book, I found an assumption of mine regarding Thomas Llewelyn’s appearance was wrong.

(I had always assumed, due to something Cyrus Barker said, that part of the reason he had hired Thomas was because, when he first saw him, Thomas had an unremarkable appearance, perfect for remaining unnoticeable, like when following a subject, for example. But in “The Black Hand,” a character very close to Barker tells Thomas that Barker noticed Thomas’s “dark and moody” expression and pictured him questioning a subject or following a suspect. So, I tried to replicate that in this artwork. Unfortunately, I have a strong feeling I just made him look angry, not moody. Sigh. But, overall, I like the concept of this pic, though details are lost at 72 dpi.)

Another note: You may also notice I included a knife scar on his left cheek near his eye, received in the book courtesy of a Sicilian assassin. Appropriately, I also included a dagger in Thomas’s hand (as well as walking sticks in both their hands).

Characters portrayed are Thomas Llewelyn (left) and Cyrus Barker (right) and are the property of Will Thomas. This is just fanart.

Media used: Initial mechanical pencil sketch, drawn over in Micron pen.

Thanks so much for commenting and faving on this. You're about the only one that comments on stuff like this, and I really appreciate it. I knew I had to draw that black hand in the background like that, a sort of sinister overtone and a seen and unseen menace.

(I'm still not sure if I can recommend the books as I like strange things for strange reasons, and this one very nearly "jumped the shark" for me.)

:D Do you put the books and related topics in the keywords? You should be getting more views at least - I use a scattershot approach in keywords, with main characters & books, and then larger abstract ideas that can be even loosely associated with the deviation . . . .

Ooh, really cool! I love the overall effect with the crosshatching style, and the hand in the background turned out awesome! ^_^

So far I just have "Barker" and "Llewelyn" as keywords. I don't figure many people will be searching for these books on DA, as they *are* rather obscure, and not the type of books to generally get fanart made of them. Maybe I'll go back and add more keywords; that's a good idea. I could add "Victorian" and "detective" at least ...

Hey, Roses and Thorns - I love your art! My husband is Will Thomas, who writes the Barker and LLewelyn books and we both think your work is marvelous. I wondered if I could interview you and link your art to his website! You can email me at feedback@willthomasauthor.com. Thanks!
